Realism tattoos recreate their subject — a face, an animal, a flower — in photographic detail, built from fine gradients of light, shadow and contrast rather than bold outlines. It’s one of the most technically demanding styles in tattooing, and at Silent Moon it’s among our most requested, worked by artists who’ve spent years refining depth, skin tone and texture in our private Bermondsey studio, South East London.
Every realism tattoo is custom. We never work from flash. You bring a reference — a photo of a loved one, a pet, a piece of art — and your artist redraws it to sit naturally on your body, adjusting contrast and scale so it stays clear years after healing.
Black and grey realism
is the most enduring form — soft grey-wash shading that ages beautifully and suits portraits, animals and memorial pieces. Colour realism adds impact and difficulty, and a few of our artists specialise in it.Realism cover-ups
are a real strength of ours. Full tonal shading lets an experienced artist absorb an old or dark tattoo into a new realistic design rather than simply draw over it. Bring a clear, well-lit photo of your existing tattoo and we’ll tell you honestly what’s achievable. What to expect. Smaller pieces may take a single session; larger or highly detailed work — a full portrait, a half-sleeve — is built over several. Your artist maps out sizing, placement and a guide price at your free consultation, and the sharper and better-lit your reference photos, the closer the result.
